If you or a loved one has difficulty standing up from a seated position, a lift chair can be a game-changer. It provides comfort, support, and—most importantly—independence. But will Medicare help cover the cost?
The short answer: Partially.
Medicare does not cover the full cost of a lift chair. However, it may cover a portion of the lift mechanism inside the chair—not the actual chair itself.
What Part Does Medicare Cover?
Medicare Part B may reimburse you for the motorized lift mechanism (the part that helps lift you to a standing position) if:
-
It’s considered medically necessary for you to safely move around your home
-
Your doctor provides a written prescription after a face-to-face evaluation
-
The lift chair is ordered from a Medicare-approved supplier
Keep in mind: the amount Medicare covers is usually around $300, depending on the model. The rest of the cost (including the chair, cushioning, features, upholstery, etc.) is your responsibility.
What You Need to Do to Qualify
-
See Your Doctor
You’ll need a face-to-face visit with your doctor to determine if a lift chair is medically necessary. -
Get a Prescription
If approved, your doctor will write a prescription for the lift mechanism and submit supporting documentation. -
Order Through a Medicare Supplier
To receive any coverage, you’ll need to order the lift chair through a Medicare-enrolled supplier who accepts assignment.
