Will Medicare Pay for a Lift Chair?

Medicare does not cover the full cost of a lift chair. However, it may cover a portion of the lift mechanism inside the chair—not the actual chair itself.

What Part Does Medicare Cover?

Medicare Part B may reimburse you for the motorized lift mechanism (the part that helps lift you to a standing position) if:

• It’s considered medically necessary for you to safely move around your home

• Your doctor provides a written prescription after a face-to-face evaluation

• The lift chair is ordered from a Medicare-approved supplier

Keep in mind: the amount Medicare covers is usually around $300, depending on the model. The rest of the cost (including the chair, cushioning, features, upholstery, etc.) is your responsibility.

2. Get a Prescription
